Adding International Perspectives to Medical Rotations

The Global Health elective takes Adtalem medical students to different countries for a clinical experience. See where they are going and how it changes their view of patient care.

For most students at Adtalem’s American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) and Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), medical education comes with immersion in a new country: AUC’s locations in St. Maarten or the United Kingdom, or RUSM’s location in Barbados. Students have opportunities to learn about the health needs of their new homes through hands-on community outreach.

After students finish their first two years of medical school, most head back to the United States for clinical education in rotations at teaching hospitals. They also have the opportunity to participate in the Global Health elective that takes them for a six-week experience to Dominican Republic, India, Thailand, Uganda, Vietnam or Zimbabwe.

Exposure to Medicine in Other Countries

Students who choose Zimbabwe live in apartments by the 2,000-bed Parirenyatwa Hospital. There they are exposed to patients with tropical diseases and HIV among other conditions. In central India, students live in a small village with faculty and students from Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences. There they see diseases such as dengue, malaria, tuberculosis and oral cancers from tobacco use.

As part of their study, students submit weekly reflections on their experiences. For RUSM student Negar Makhsous, her time in Vietnam deepened her cultural sensitivity and patient advocacy.

My experience at Cho Ray Hospital has broadened my understanding of global health practices and emphasized the importance of culturally sensitive healthcare education. It has influenced my future approach to patient care, advocating for a balance between cultural respect and medical efficacy.
