Meet the Veterinary Visionary Innovating Urgent Pet Care

How Jordana Eisenstein, DVM ’05, transformed a childhood passion into a revolutionary urgent care model built on a high-quality education from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.

From the earliest moments of her life, Dr. Eisenstein knew that her destiny was intertwined with animals. Volunteering at a local animal shelter at just 10 years old, she felt a magnetic pull toward veterinary medicine that sparked a lifelong commitment that laid the foundation for a career defined by clinical excellence and an enduring promise to make a difference.

Dr. Eisenstein’s mission extends beyond improving patient care—it is about transforming the culture of the veterinary profession. Recognizing that many of her peers suffer from burnout and isolation, she is dedicated to reimagining a work environment where veterinarians are not only respected but also empowered.

“I want to give excitement and joy back to veterinarians in my community,” she says.

Her vision is both timely and vital.

As the demand for companion animal healthcare continues to surge—with projections estimating the need for 55,000 additional veterinarians by 2030—the role of visionary leaders like Dr. Eisenstein becomes even more crucial. In that same timeframe, 75 million pets could lose access to veterinary care due to the deficit in professionals.

By championing a model that prioritizes urgent care and community engagement, she is both addressing today’s challenges and paving the way for a more resilient and compassionate veterinary landscape.

Impacting Urgent Care Through Innovation

The evolving nature of pet care, where animals are increasingly considered family members, has raised the stakes in veterinary medicine, placing more pressure on practitioners to deliver exceptional care under challenging circumstances.

Faced with these challenges, Dr. Eisenstein took a bold step in 2016 by selling her practice, a decision initially embraced to escape the burdens of ownership. However, while working relief shifts at various clinics, she realized that the inefficiencies and extended wait times were symptomatic of a deeper problem in the veterinary industry.

It was clear that change was not just necessary—it was inevitable.

In 2022, she channeled that determination into the founding of EVS Pet Urgent Care

With a clear focus on urgent care services, her innovative clinics address immediate health issues such as ear infections, skin irritations and gastrointestinal concerns, deliberately excluding routine preventive care, hospitalization and surgery. “Our lane is strictly urgent care,” Dr. Eisenstein explains, emphasizing how this specialization allows for dramatically reduced wait times and a more efficient patient flow.

A cornerstone of EVS Pet Urgent Care’s success is its seamless integration of technology. By deploying a custom app that enables clients to check in online and provide detailed pet information before arrival, the clinics can expedite the clinical process, reduce stress for both pets and their owners and improve overall service quality. Each EVS clinic is locally managed by a veterinarian who resides in the community, ensuring that the care provided is attuned to local needs and fostering a sense of personal connection rarely found in larger, more impersonal practices.

A Foundation for Success at RUSVM

Dr. Eisenstein chose to live out her lifelong dream at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) largely because of a family legacy. “I decided to go there because my sister was a graduate,” she recalls, inspired by watching her sister, Alycia Eisenstein, DVM '00, jump straight into private practice with confidence and readiness. That early insight left such an impact on her that she never considered applying elsewhere.

What makes RUSVM truly unique, she explains, is not just its Caribbean setting, but the unprecedented level of care the professors provide. One story she often shares is of a small animal medicine final exam when a group of classmates suggested calling a professor on a Saturday night. Despite initial hesitation, they made the call, and the professor stayed on the phone until every student grasped the material.

I've never experienced a learning environment where professors felt as approachable and supportive as they did at RUSVM. It was like having expert mentors right in our own community.

On her very first day at the University of Minnesota for clinical rotations, being recognized as an RUSVM student meant immediate immersion in the surgical team, underscoring how well RUSVM prepared its students for real-world challenges.

Fostering Resilience and Compassion in New Veterinary Leaders

RUSVM’s presence continues to resonate deeply within Dr. Eisenstein’s professional life. All four of her managing veterinarians at EVS Pet Urgent Care are RUSVM alumni, a testament to the enduring family-like connection that the school cultivates.

“The experience at RUSVM bonds us together like family,” she says. “Everyone becomes part of a tight-knit community where support, mentorship and genuine care are the norm. These bonds last a lifetime, uniting us as we step into the veterinary world and continue to rely on each other like family.”

This connection extends to the next generation of her own family, with her niece, Danielle Eisenstein, DVM ’20, now serving as a managing veterinarian at EVS’ Kissimmee location.
